Matthew 21 Notes
[ ] V3
God is humble.
"A reed he will not break a smoldering Wick he will not snuff out."
Isaiah 42:3.
"This is the one that I esteem the one who is humble and contrite in heart and who trembles at my word."
Isaiah 66v2.
[ ] V4
Commentary:
"not that he rode upon them both, but on the foal only; for so it should be rendered, "upon an ass, that is, upon a colt, the foal of an ass". The Jews have a fable, that the ass Abraham saddled, when he went to sacrifice his son Isaac, was the foal of the ass that was created on the evening of the sabbath, that is, at the creation; and that the same Moses set his wife and sons upon, when he came out of Midian; and the same ass, they say, Messiah the son of David was to ride upon at his coming." (Gill's exposition of the entire bible)
OT xref=
"Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about." Genesis 22v2&3.
[ ] V5
OT xref:
"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
Zechariah 9:9
See in context
Zechariah 9v8 = "Then I will encamp at my house as a guard, so that none shall march to and fro; no oppressor shall again march over them, for now I see with my own eyes."
Now the Jews who accept God as Jesus Christ get to see this blessing fulfilled. Respect of the Lord bring wealth, honor and LIFE. Life to the Jews in the land of Canan, in Zion.
Notice that acceptance of God in form of Jesus Christ meant God's protection, but rejection of God meant loss of His protection. If you kick the good strong guy out of your house, and then someone breaks in your house to rob you, then you have no one left in the house to protect you. The bad Jews kicked God out of Jerusalem and the general population of Jews let their leaders do it. Then they murdered God himself via Jesus Christ. So, When the Romans came to attack the Jews for their rebelliousness, the Jews had no one good & strong left in their midst to protect them.
[ ] V9
Psalm 118:25 "O LORD, save us, we pray. We beseech You, O LORD, cause us to prosper! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD." A phrase of acceptance of holy people
[ ] 13
Xref = "I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar, for My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations." Isaiah 56:7.
Xref= "Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Yes, I too have seen it, declares the LORD." Jeremiah 7:11. Full chapter reminds Jews of Moses's tabernacle capture via phillistine army and destruction of shiloh. Also warns of 1st temple destruction via Babylonians. Here God warns of a third destruction of God's house and Jerusalem, though they gave little thought of His warning.
[ ] V16
Xref= "From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger." Psalm 8:2
[ ] V42
Xref= "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the LORD, and it is marvelous in our eyes." Psalm 118:22–23.
Taken from Isaiah 28:16 ►
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD,
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone,
A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed.
He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
The tested, reliable stone is Israel in Zion. The nations rejected Israel, the nation that would bless all other nations, holding the region together, in worship at God's temple.
So too Jesus Christ was reliable in character, but the Jews rejected him anyway. The walls, or other Israelites, will fall when the remove the cheif load bearing wall. The Jews, a.k.a. the building, cannot stand without their leader.
[ ] V43
Meaning the gentiles instead of the Jews.
