God is in Control

In Genesis chapter one, we learn that God made all things.

This should bring us some comfort.

When the world seems to spin out of control, we must remember that He made it all.

God can reign the earth and its chaotic parts back into correct orbit, and He will in due time.

Consider when God created the ocean. It is so powerful and no one can tame it, but Yahweh:

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels a shouted for joy? “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?"¹

Therefore we should not worry.

God is in control.

We should try to remember that Yahweh calmed the stormy seas that threatened the prophet Jonah's life:

"So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging."²

And again God calmed the stormy seas that threatened Jesus Christ's disciples' lives.

"Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”"³

If God can save Job, Jonah and Jesus Christ's disciples, then He can save us from our troubles.

So do not worry.

There is a good passage in the New Testament that reminds us about how God is in control of his own creation.

"“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."⁴

So let us remember that our very hairs are numbered.

God created all things, including us.

Therefore we should not worry.

Things may get VERY bad.

But ultimately, God is in control.

Yahweh tells the wave of life's sorrows where to stop.

He can stop the waves of trouble in our lives too.

Let us pray for peace in such a troubled world.
