Keep Singing: When Another Voice Seemed to Join the Song

It was September 2017 when I felt the Lord wanted me to lead praise music at Salem House of Prayer. I contacted the pastors and scheduled a time to lead worship.

When we arrived, we set up our music equipment and completed a sound check. Only my friend Raquel and I were leading worship that evening. I sang and played guitar, and she sang with me. As we led the congregation in worship, we felt the Spirit of the Lord with us as we praised Him.

Around the middle of our worship set, whenever I held a long note, the sound seemed to become smoother and fuller. It was almost as though another voice or tone was blending with mine through the microphone. After the worship set, Raquel, the other pastors and I held a debriefing session. At that time Raquel told me that she, too, had heard what sounded like another voice singing with me.

I joyfully exclaimed, “That was my angel!” The pastors agreed, and we concluded the meeting. The next day one of the attenders of our worship set said that they also heard angels singing along with us while we praised God that night.

Days later I began to analyze what had happened. I received the moment as a prophetic experience—or, as others might describe it, a spiritual experience—because I believed God was speaking His heart into the situation through me in an emotional and musical way.

Scripture teaches us to test what we believe may be prophetic. We can ask whether our interpretation agrees with God’s Word, whether Scripture records similar experiences, and whether the experience produces godly fruit (1 Thessalonians 5:20–21; 1 John 4:1).

Scripture records many occasions when God made people aware of angels. Genesis 18 describes Abraham encountering three visitors, and Genesis 19 identifies two of them as angels. Luke 2:13–14 describes shepherds becoming aware of a multitude of angels praising God. These accounts gave me a biblical framework for understanding what happened. I believed I had personally experienced an angel in a way that reminded me of these biblical stories. At the same time, experiences like this remain open to interpretation.

This was not the first time something similar had happened. On other occasions when I led worship, people afterward told me that they had heard what sounded like an angel singing with me. I understand that some people may interpret these experiences differently, and that is okay. People can faithfully follow God whether or not they share my interpretation.

Still, I received it as a genuinely divine experience. Other believers confirmed that they had heard the unusual sound. Its source remained open to interpretation, but the experience drew people closer to the Lord, and it drew me closer to Him too. I understood those responses as confirmation that God was using the moment to encourage us. God reminded me of His faithful presence—the same God who was with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is with His people today.

The experience also brought to mind the biblical picture of countless angels surrounding God’s throne. Revelation 5:11 says, “Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands” (Revelation 5:11 NASB 1995).

That evening reminded me that God hears us when we pray and sing to Him. It encouraged me to keep praising Him through hard times, and I pray that this story encourages others to do the same. So keep praising God. He is worthy.
